Athens police investigating alleged rape depicted on social media
Editor's note: The Post does not identify victims of sexual assault.
Athens Police are investigating a rape complaint filed by a woman after a video showing a man performing oral sex on her on a sidewalk in Uptown Athens circulated on Instagram on Sunday afternoon.
The woman filed the complaint after hearing of the video’s existence Sunday, Athens Police officer Neal Dicken said. The department has not obtained a copy of the video, which was evidently removed from Instagram earlier in the day.
Dicken didn’t say whether any suspects had emerged, and he said the alleged rape didn’t occur Sunday but wouldn’t specify any further.
Popular local Twitter accounts caused a frenzy Sunday evening after screenshots of the video were posted on the site. Screenshots show the incident taking place in front of Chase bank, 2 S. Court St.
A picture was originally tweeted from a now-deleted account and then tweeted by @Athens_ Tonight, an account with a bio reading “OU Nightlife Done Right.” The picture showed a man with his hand in a woman’s crotch. The woman pictured was pressed against the window of the bank.
In response to the photo, Brenen’s Coffee Café, 38 S. Court St., replied: “This is disgusting and irresponsible to be tweeting. Get some brains and class.”
Twitter users sounded off on the popular @OU_Confessions, a non-university account to which people can anonymously submit confessions and opinions. Some expressed anger, disappointment and confusion.
