Since its launch in 2009, Kickstarter has seen more than 12,500 successful projects, giving it an overall success rate of 44 percent. Collectively, more than $60 million has been raised. The number of successful projects also has increased significantly, with mid-June and mid-July 2011 numbers equaling the total successes from the first year. Similar statistics were not available for IndieGoGo, but Kazmark estimates the site has a 3 percent success rate. For OU students who have received enough funding, those sites have provided a platform for them to raise funds and bring their ideas to fruition.

The creator sets a funding goal and rewards donors for different contribution amounts, offering anything from signed photographs to copies of finished products. The two websites feature several key differences, though. Both sites allow users to raise money for creative projects, but whereas Kickstarter is exclusively for such projects, IndieGoGo also allows creators to use the site for nonprofit causes and for-profit businesses. Kickstarter also guarantees donors that their money will be given only to a project if that project reaches its funding goal. IndieGoGo has no such policy. “I think it gives backers security to know that if the creator doesn’t reach their goal, he or she won’t just end up with a couple hundred dollars to keep even though the project won’t get done,” Kazmark said. At Ohio University, students more often are turning to these sites to fund class projects, thesis work or personal projects. Though some have reached their funding goals, not everyone has been so successful. After starting a campaign on IndieGoGo, Curt Sova, a senior studying video production, resorted to funding his short film Bloodline out of his own pocket. “I just didn’t get much from IndieGoGo, so I ended up funding the short myself,” Sova said.
he “starving artist” has long been a stereotypical image for the world of amateur art. Before musicians, artists or filmmakers reach stardom, they are expected to spend years barely scraping by as they struggle to find the money to fund their projects. Yet two websites — IndieGoGo and Kickstarter — are striving to change the game. “Creative people have had ideas for a long time, but their biggest obstacle is financing,” said Justin Kazmark of Kickstarter’s communications team. “We help with getting over that hurdle to bring those projects to life.” Both websites allow users to create “proj-

SUCCESSFUL!
In search of funds to cover travel, convention and equipment expenses for her master’s project, OU graduate student Heather Haynes turned to Kickstarter. “I knew of some bands who had used it for their albums, but when I saw it was for any creative project, I thought it was perfect for this,” Haynes said. “It’s just a lot faster than getting a grant.” Haynes’ project is a documentary that delves into the modern world of folk tunes in Appalachia. As a violinist herself, Haynes’ interest in the subject is twofold: To study her own journey in fiddling and to observe the “shifting yet thriving tradition.” Haynes was able to reach her $1,600 goal with 16 backers but was disappointed that she did not have more diverse donors. “They don’t really tell you that you’re going to have to do all the advertising for your project, so I really only ended up with three strangers donating to me,” she said. Haynes’ project reached its goal in August. Her work on her documentary will continue throughout this academic year as she travels to fiddlers conventions and festivals. “Without additional assistance, I wouldn’t have had any new material to edit for the final project,” Haynes said. “I was lucky everyone came through for me so quickly.”
SUCCESSFUL!
Faced with the desire to produce a studio album while still making its music available free of charge, Athens-based rock group Mind Fish needed a way to pay for mastering its upcoming album, Watch Out! “I want people to pay the same amount for the album that I do: nothing,” said Dean Tartaglia, singer and guitarist for Mind Fish and a senior studying music performance. “That’s where something like Kickstarter came in.” Using Kickstarter, Mind Fish reached its $1,000 goal in less than a week. Though the project is still live, it seems to have plateaued at $1,050. Mind Fish began recording Watch Out! earlier this year with producer and Ohio University professor Eddie Ashworth. After wrapping up the recording process in mid-August, Tartaglia said the band hoped to professionally master the album in Nashville, New York City or Los Angeles. “It’s been great knowing that people out there support us, even if they don’t know us,” Tartaglia said. Tartaglia added that the album is moving along ahead of schedule and that Mind Fish is looking at a December or January release date. “I just want to get the music out there,” he said. “That’s what I really care about at this point, and I’m just glad we were able to get to this stage.”

As she began work on her master’s project, OU graduate student Jennifer Roberts realized she had three options: go into debt, find a new project or forego a project entirely. “I really had no other outlet, and this project is going to cost me at least $4,200 for traveling, production costs, film festival costs, etc.,” Roberts said. “(IndieGoGo) has been a lifesaver in that respect.” Roberts’ masters project — a documentary exploring the slow disappearance of Tangier Island, Va., due to erosion — is both a study about the island and a cry for help. Without the construction of a seawall, Roberts said, the island will eventually disappear into the Chesapeake Bay. “My hope is to raise awareness and support to help save Tangier Island,” she said. “I plan to use the film as a vehicle to spread the message and to later create a separate fundraising initiative that will allow people to donate directly to funding a seawall for the island.” Roberts said that, so far, donors have not been entirely random, but she doesn’t know them all personally. Her campaign on IndieGoGo has about 30 days left to reach its goal. She has raised $1,715 thus far, with the first $800 to $1,000 being pledged in the first 48 hours.
SUCCESSFUL!
Senior film student Josh Young felt a need to understand his father. Driven by this calling, he began working on his short film, Burial. “Everyone has that special person they wish they had one more conversation with or could ask just a few more questions,” Young wrote on his IndieGoGo campaign page. The fictional film follows the story of a young girl, Jesse, as she pleads with her father to explain their past. In addition to exploring personal aspects of his life, Young said he wanted the project to delve into a new world visually. “A big priority for the film was marrying technology and content,” Young said. In order to do this, Young needed to rent a RED One 4K digital-camera system, which alone cost more than $3,000 to rent for a week. He also needed to compensate actors and pay for the construction and creation of sets and costumes. “A few friends of mine had used IndieGoGo for their own projects, so it just seemed like a great way to promote and publicize indie films,” Young said. Young asked for $4,000 on his campaign page, a goal he surpassed by $96. Of his 39 backers, Young knew almost all of them, although he said he needed IndieGoGo to bring them together. “It (IndieGoGo) provides the front for people to donate to,” he said. “Even people who know and want to support you most of the time have no idea where to go.” Young is wrapping up work on Burial, which he hopes to complete sometime in November.
