Hockey: Bobcats rout West Virginia Friday
The Bobcats controlled the pace of Friday night's contest with the West Virginia Mountaineers from the onset as they pulled out a 7-1 victory.
The line of freshmen Patrick Spellacy and Joe Breslin, along with senior Brett Agnew, supplied much of the offense. The trio accounted for four goals and seven points.
Michael Harris, a sophomore, contributed two goals and an assist as well, and a strong game in net for freshman Ryan Heltion shut down the West Virginia attack and led to him being named the first star of the game.
After Friday's game, Heltion is now sporting a .951 save percentage and a 0.96 goals against average. He has risen to the occassion, grabbing the starting goalie spot for the early going.
While coach Jonathon Sheridan wouldn't say if Heltion was gauranteed the next few starts in net, he did his effort has been very impressive.
Defensman J.C. Gulch, a main contributor from last season's team was a scratch for the third consecutive game to start the season, and Sheridan declined to provide addtional details as to his absence.
The Bobcats (2-0-1, 6 pts) will play Liberty (4-0-0, 12 pts) this upcoming Friday and Saturday at Bird Arena. Ohio enters the week ranked No. 9 in the latest ACHA rankings, which were released before the Bobcats game against West Virginia. Liberty is ranked No. 13.
