Local resident pleads not guilty to assault charge of OU student

A 30-year-old Athens resident pleaded not guilty to one count of assault Tuesday stemming from an incident involving an Ohio University student earlier this week.

Chris Moschell, of 7280 Luhrig Road, is charged with assaulting Adam Mielnicki, an OU graduate student from Garfield Heights, outside Goodfella's Pizza, 35 N. Court St., at about 2:13 a.m. Tuesday, according to an Athens Police report.

Moschell was arrested near the scene and taken to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, according to the report.

Moschell was arraigned on one count of assault in Athens County Municipal Court Tuesday. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was released on his own recognizance but ordered to stay away from Mielnicki, according to court documents.

Assault is a first-degree misdemeanor. Moschell could spend a maximum of 180 days in jail and pay a maximum fine of $1,000 if convicted, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

Moschell is due back in court Feb. 15 for a preliminary hearing.
